The energy conversation these days is centered around the costs to convert and maintain alternative energy plants. Most of us are on the side lines, allowing our elected officials to make those decisions, but you must understand why alternative energy cost matters to you. Hopefully you will gain a new perspective and take action.

This article will not address the detail costs of design, building , transition, and maintenance. What I would like to focus on is the cost to you, the end user of these new plants and farms. Many of these projects are funded by bonds that have to be paid back with interest. Who pays it? So what we are looking at is the cost of development plus repayment of the bonds and of course a profit margin for the utility company.

I don't know all of the science and finance, but I do know the character of utility companies, wall street and governmental agencies. They are unpredictable and subject to stark swings that make no sense. Most of the times the changes are in directions not in our favor. We all agree that we as a people must pursue alternative energy, but maybe it is time we think globally and act locally(at your house).

Most of us are paying a bundle for electricity currently. This is only going to get worst before it improves. Many utility companies are looking for ways to improve their profitability. Again who pays? The government has created many incentives for those who can afford it to get out of this loop. We all need to evaluate how much we can participate in these programs. Reduction should be our watch word. If we as home owners can reduce our usage from the power company by 25% to total elimination we should go for it. The costs have come down and if you are a "do it yourself-er", it is very affordable.

As you can see many of the costs being discussed in the public media are not giving the whole story. The impact to you is always greater than expressed by politicians. I hope you get the picture and understand why alternative energy cost matters to you.
